Hugh Raymond Harrison

Hugh Raymond Harrison was a son of George Geoffrey Harrison and Charlotte Harrison (nee Coldwell) who were married on 21 July 1915 in Wrangthorn Parish Church, York.  George Geoffrey Harrison, who was born 23 March 1890, was an Army Sergeant when he and Charlotte Coldwell got married.  They had at least three children whose births were registered in Leeds, Yorkshire:

Geoffrey Austin (first quarter of 1920)

Muriel I. (first quarter of 1921)

Hugh Raymond (second quarter of 1922)

In the CWGC Debt of Honour website the Harrison family address is recorded as Marino, Co. Down.  Hugh Raymond Harrison was the second of two brothers to die in war.

During the Second World War Flight Lieutenant Hugh Raymond Harrison DFC (No. 110412) served with the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve in Bomber Command and he was one of a seven man crew aboard an Avro Lancaster Mark I aircraft (LM174) that took off at 11.03 pm on 24 July 1944 from RAF Kelstern in  Lincolnshire on a mission to bomb Kiel in Germany.  The aircraft was lost without trace and the other six crew members who died that night were:

• Sergeant Roy Joseph Davies (aged 21) from Leicester

• Flight Sergeant Kenneth Welland Dewey, Royal Canadian Air Force

• Flight Sergeant Lorne Albert Morfoot (aged 19), Royal Canadian Air Force

• Sergeant Alfred James Newell (aged 22) from Cardonald, Renfrewshire

• Sergeant Frank Alfred Powell (aged 20)

• Pilot Officer Harold Alexander Smith, Royal Canadian Air Force

Flight Lieutenant Hugh Raymond Harrison DFC (No. 110412) and his comrades are commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial in Surrey.

Flight Lieutenant Hugh Raymond Harrison DFC (No. 110412) was 22 when he died, exactly six weeks after his brother died, and his effects amounted to some £544.  His home address was recorded as Lismore, Southfield Drive, Roundhay in Leeds, and probate was granted to his father, George Geoffrey Harrison.

George Geoffrey Harrison was 84 when he died in 1974.  Charlotte Harrison pre-deceased her husband; she died on 1 September 1958 (aged 66) and, prior to her death, she had been living at 6 Hazeldene Avenue, Bangor.
