Roy Gallop was born on February 23, 1925 at Epping, Essex. He was the son of William G Gallop (a baker) and Louisa J Gallop nee Pickett. He had three siblings: William L. C. Gallop born 1915, George P. Gallop born 1919 and Joan L. Gallop born 1926.
Leaving school at 14, Roy worked initially as a roundsman with his father's bakery business in Chingford. He lied about his age to join the RAF at age 16 and was selected for pilot training. He flew with 625 Squadron and was on his 7th sortie. He died at at the age of 18.
